Preparation for READING ALOUD

READING ALOUD

To prepare for your oral exam on Monday 5th February you will need to read a short extract aloud.

You can practise at home by reading news extracts and listening. Choose from topics which are of interest to you.

Preparation for reading aloud:

A. Understanding content

Identify the genre: – review, news bulletin, poem etc.
Consider cultural context and cultural references
Understand the overall message/ content of the extract
Identify voices: narrator, speakers, tone, mood, emotion

B. Reproducing Message
1. Aim to convey the message – be dramatic, but within the genre.
2. Identify key words in a sentence and the corresponding sentence stress.
3. Accentuate the meaning of words, identify intonation, look for word linking.

C. Record yourself
1. Compare how you sound with the online model.
2. Identify the differences.
3. Listen again – us you MP3, ipod….. listen as much as you can.
